Tesco online lead departs for Google

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Tesco’s managing director for online has departed the company in order to take up a similar position at Google’s cloud computing business Google Cloud.

Chris Poad, who took up the position at Tesco in October 2019, has overseen the ‘Big Four’ grocers online department as it tackled the lockdown surge of home deliveries throughout the pandemic

Poad said that during this time – which he labelled as “one of the most intense periods of his career” – Tesco managed to double the size of its business.

In a Linkedin post, Poad said: “After a fantastic few years at Tesco, I started my new role at Google this morning. Leading Tesco’s online business has been one of the most rewarding and, at times, intense periods of my career. We doubled the size of the business, launched new services, and supported millions of customers at a time when they really needed us.

“I am hugely proud of the team and the strategy I leave behind and wish my successor all the luck in the world. I’m very excited to meet my new colleagues and customers at Google Cloud over the coming weeks.”

Tesco has appointed its former Tesco Mobile CEO, Tom Denyard, as Poad’s replacement.
