Currys doubles reward for its Cash for Trash recycling scheme

In this episode we speak to Matt Dalton, consumer sector leader at Forvis Mazars. Matt discussed the biggest challenges facing the retail sector, from cost pressures and wage increases to polarised property markets and geopolitical shocks, and the ways in which retailers can best navigate these. We also explore how short-term cost-cutting could undermine long-term resilience, and how retailers can best remain agile and adaptable in unforecastable times.

Currys has doubled the reward in its Cash for Trash recycling scheme in a bid to encourage more customers to recycle unwanted electronic items.

Until 8 July, anyone dropping off old electricals at a Currys store in the UK will receive a £10 voucher for a minimum spend of £50 – twice the usual amount.

The offer applies to any item with a plug or battery, regardless of where it was bought. Customers with more valuable items can still access trade-in deals, receiving either the trade-in value or the guaranteed voucher.

Currys said it collected 1.7 million items through the scheme last year. Devices are either repaired, refurbished, harvested for parts or responsibly recycled.

The programme is supported by the company’s repair and recycling facility in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

Paul Coughlan, chief people, communications and sustainability officer, said: “We are thrilled to be doubling our flagship Cash for Trash offer for the first time ever. This limited-time promotion not only incentivises customers to recycle their old tech, but also helps tackle the growing e-waste crisis in the UK.

“We’re proud to be helping customers save, while making sure their unwanted tech is processed responsibly. It’s better for us, better for customers, and better for the planet to help keep tech in the hands of the people that need it for as long as possible.”
