Morrisons names Emma Macey as trading director for general merchandise

In this episode we speak to Matt Dalton, consumer sector leader at Forvis Mazars. Matt discussed the biggest challenges facing the retail sector, from cost pressures and wage increases to polarised property markets and geopolitical shocks, and the ways in which retailers can best navigate these. We also explore how short-term cost-cutting could undermine long-term resilience, and how retailers can best remain agile and adaptable in unforecastable times.

Morrisons has announced it has appointed Emma Macey as its new trading director for general merchandise.

Announcing the appointment on Linkedin, Morrisons said Macey brings with her over two decades of commercial retail experience; most recently at Asda, where she held a number of senior roles across commercial, e-commerce, retail operations and customer proposition.

Morrisons said: “with a strong background in buying, category strategy and leading high-performing teams, Macey is known for delivering market share gains, supplier-led innovation and customer-focused offers, particularly across General Merchandise.

“She combines deep commercial know-how with a real passion for delivering for customers, and we’re excited to have her on board as we continue to build momentum across the business.”

Earlier this week, Morrisons has appointed Claire Farrant, former BP CMO/VP Mobility, as its new chief marketing director, effective 3 June 2025.

Prior to BP, Farrant spent 18 years in senior roles in the UK grocery sector – over eight years as marketing director of Lidl UK and almost a decade in a number of high profile roles at Tesco.

At Morrisons, Farrant will work very closely with Matt McLellan who joins from Asda at the beginning of June in the newly created role of Group Data and Media director.

Farrant replaces Rachel Eyre who has decided to exit the business.
