Co-op opens new convenience store in Swansea

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

The new 2,500 sq ft convenience store, which is located on St Teilo Street, opens between 7am and 10pm daily and has created 15 local jobs.

Designed to serve and support the community, the store includes a bakery, hot food and Costa Coffee express, alongside a focus on fresh, healthy products; meal ideas; everyday essentials; food-to-go; chilled beers and wines; ready meals; pizzas and, free-from; vegan and plant-based products.

Parcel collection services are also available through an InPost Locker, while a soft plastic recycle unit was added for the disposal of crisp packets, bread bags, ready meal lids, yogurt pots, biscuit wrappers, and pet food pouches.

Stacey Jones, store manager at Co-op Pontarddulais, said: “The whole team is delighted to launch Co-op’s newest store – we’ve had a great response, and we are really enjoying welcoming the community into their new Co-op.

“Our aim is to operate at the heart of local life, and we’ve worked to develop the range, choice and added services to create a compelling offer to serve and support our community, conveniently. This includes a focus on delivering member-value so that the people who own our business, Co-op’s member-owners, benefit every time they shop.”
