JD Sports adds Bert Hoyt as non-exec director

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

JD Sports Fashion has announced the appointment of Bert Hoyt as a non-executive director at the group, effective 8 September 2021.

Hoyt most recently acted as VP/GM at Nike EMEA until his retirement from the role in January 2021.

Having joined Nike in 1998, Hoyt presided over a period of “substantial growth in revenues and profitability” at the brand, and is acknowledged for “transforming” the group’s Western Europe and EMEA operations over the past nine years.

Prior to his time at Nike, Hoyt spent a decade at Puma as general manager at Puma International, and was also previously a top 200 ATP tennis professional from 1977 to 1984.

Peter Cowgill, executive chairman at JD Sports, said: “Bert has an extensive knowledge of the market in which JD operates and a deep understanding of key supplier relationships, market dynamics and international operations.

“I have every confidence that Bert will have an extremely positive impact on the future of JD and its ongoing growth and success. It will be a real pleasure to work together on the board.”

He added that the group is making “substantial progress” with a number of additional appointments that are set to “address the composition, skill sets, and balance of the board”.
