Sainsbury’s has launched a search for a new chairman to replace Martin Scicluna, according to reports from Sky News.
The supermarket chain has reportedly called on headhunters to find a successor to Scicluna, who has held the position since the spring of 2019.
One source suggested to Sky that executive search firm MWM Consulting had been in the running to lead the search.
Scicluna is expected to remain in his role until a replacement takes his place at the retailer.
Under corporate governance rules, Scicluna would face a mandatory ‘time out’ in late 2027, nine years after joining the board. However, insiders suggested he could step down as early as next year’s annual general meeting.
A principal task facing the next chairman will be succession planning for CEO Simon Roberts, who has run the company since 2020.
The boardroom search will be led by senior independent director Adrian Hennah, a former finance chief at Reckitt Benckiser.
Sky said it was “unclear” whether existing board members will put themselves forward for the CEO role. Existing non-executive directors include Katie Bickerstaffe, the former Marks and Spencer co-chief executive, and Keith Weed, a former Unilever marketing executive.
Sainsbury’s declined to comment.
