Usdaw has entered into consultation talks with Next as the retailer plans to close a Bradford warehouse, putting 780 local jobs at risk.
The news comes as Next wants to centralise its online operations in a bid to improve stock availability.
The union said it understood that the clothing retailer intends to shut its site on Toftshaw Lane by September 2024 as part of plans to expand its facility in South Elmsall.
In addition, an option to carry out required roof repairs at the Bradford warehouse was “not cost-effective”, while the move to South Elmsall would lower its environmental impact by cutting the number of lorry journeys.
Mark Todd, national officer of Usdaw, said: “Next management have briefed staff about their proposed closure of the Bradford site and development of a new operation at South Elmsall.
“Our priorities are to secure the best available deal for those impacted by these proposals and keep as many staff as possible employed within the business, and where necessary, support members securing alternative employment.”
Todd added: “In the meantime, we are providing our members with the support, advice and representation they need at this difficult time.”
The retailer maintains that sufficient jobs would be available elsewhere in the company for affected workers who wish to relocate.
Claire Hopkins, warehousing and distribution director of Next, said: “This has not been an easy decision and we appreciate this announcement will be difficult for our team at Toftshaw.
“We would like to thank everyone in advance for their usual dedication and support as we work together to ensure as smooth a transition as possible, but also so that everyone on site receives the relevant help and assistance in finding alternative employment.”
