The number of retail job losses since 2020 is set to pass 100,000 as a result of the 12,500 jobs at risk after the collapse of Wilko, according to data from the Centre for Retail Research.

The latest data shows that there have been more than 17,000 jobs lost at large and medium sized retailers this year.

However, this only takes into account a small percentage of the jobs lost at Wilko with the bulk of staff not taken into account yet.

The total of 17,000 jobs lost this year dwarfs the 6,732 jobs lost in 2022, but it is still lower than the 24,179 jobs lost in 2021 and 53,364 jobs lost in 2020.

All 400 Wilko stores were set to close next month before Poundland and B&M purchased a number of the stores.

It is as yet unclear what will happen to the staff at those stores although Poundland have stated that Wilko staff will have priority when applying for jobs at the 71 stores it has purchased.

In the last three years the retail industry has seen giants such as Woolworths and Debenhams fueling the losses.
