Harrods appoints Mark Blundell as chief retail officer

On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

Harrods has promoted chief retail officer Mark Blundell to its management executive committee as the retailer strengthens its senior leadership team.

Blundell, who joined Harrods in 2018 as head of retail projects and retail services before becoming retail director in 2022, will oversee service and operational standards across all physical retail channels.

His earlier career included leadership roles at John Lewis Partnership and Waitrose, following a graduate position at Barclays.

The promotion follows the August appointment of Sarah Myler to the executive committee as chief brand and reputation officer.

Myler joined Harrods in 2018 and previously led its international marketing strategy, international business development, communications and events.

In her new role, she is responsible for the company’s marketing and communications strategy and for safeguarding the Harrods brand.

Blundell and Myler join chief information officer Andreas Efstathiou, chief people officer Abi Weeks, chief digital, customer and strategy officer Caitlin Innes, chief financial officer Geoff Weaver and director of store operations James Healy on the management executive committee, which reports to Ward.

Michael Ward, managing director, said: “Mark is a dynamic leader with a proven track record in managing teams to deliver outstanding customer experiences and strong commercial results. His strategic leadership will support the ongoing development of our high-performance culture and continuing evolution of Harrods as the leading luxury authority.”
