Waitrose staff have reportedly been warned that their jobs could be at risk as the retailer looks to change work shifts and hours in a bid to increase productivity and lower costs across the group.
According to the Financial Times, the move forms part of a new project for the group called ‘Simpler Shops’ that will look to streamline operations in the business.
In a video reportedly seen by the FT, Tina Mitchell, retail director at Waitrose, warned employees that the move “may result in some partners leaving the business”, adding that “sacrifices and compromises” may need to be made.
She said: “Unless we change how we work, there’s a real danger that the partnership won’t exist in the form that we want it to in the future.”
The FT said Waitrose has also told some staff they will need to switch work shifts to “ensure that shop floors are adequately staffed during their busiest times”.
Waitrose reportedly expects to save around £50m annually from the changes.
A Waitrose spokesman told the FT: “[We’re] asking some partners across our shops to change their working pattern, and are proposing to cease night shifts at a small number of stores. This isn’t something we take lightly and we’ll be supporting our partners through any changes.”
Retail Sector has contacted Waitrose for further comment.
