On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Iceland Foods has announced the appointment of its managing director, Richard Walker as executive chairman, as his father, Malcolm Walker is to step down from the role.

However, it is reported that Malcolm Walker will remain on the board as founder, having launched the family-owned frozen food retailer back in 1970.

Richard Walker has been running the business alongside the retailer’s chief executive and co-owner Tarsem Dhaliwal since being named managing director in 2018.

He first joined the family business 11 years ago on the shop floor and as a store manager in Twickenham, before moving into head office roles at the business.

In his appointment, he will also take over as chair of the Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

An Iceland spokesperson said: “Richard is really looking forward to presiding over the executive board while continuing to fulfil his direct responsibilities for Iceland.”
