Amazon has announced that from 19 January 2022 it will no longer accept Visa credit cards as a payment method in the UK.
In an email to customers, the online retail giant said that it has made the decision “due to the high fees Visa charges for processing credit card transactions”.
However, it added that it will still accept Visa debit cards and other non-Visa credit cards such as Amex and Mastercard.
In the email, Amazon advised all Visa credit card users to update payment methods for all of its services, including Amazon Prime.
In response, a Visa spokesperson told the BBC: “UK shoppers can use their Visa debit and credit cards at Amazon UK today and throughout the holiday season.
“We are very disappointed that Amazon is threatening to restrict consumer choice in the future. When consumer choice is limited, nobody wins.”
They added: “We have a long-standing relationship with Amazon, and we continue to work toward a resolution, so our cardholders can use their preferred Visa credit cards at Amazon UK without Amazon-imposed restrictions come January 2022.”
