Aldi has announced it will increase hourly pay for store assistants to £13.50 nationally and £14.88 inside the M25 from 1 April 2026.
The supermarket said the move, which benefits more than 28,000 hourly-paid staff, represents its second pay rise this year. National rates will eventually rise to £14.47 based on length of service, while London rates will reach £15.20.
The pay increase is part of a £42m investment in staff during 2026. The retailer also recently extended its maternity policy to 26 weeks at full pay.
In addition, Aldi confirmed it will continue to provide paid breaks for all staff, setting it apart from other major supermarket chains. The company estimates this benefit is worth approximately £1,500 annually to the average store worker.
The chain currently employs more than 45,000 people across the UK.
News of the pay boost follows another announcement that it plans to open 40 new stores this year as part of a £370m investment programme, alongside a £300m project to upgrade existing sites.
Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi, said: “Our colleagues work incredibly hard to deliver exceptional value for our customers, and we’re rewarding that dedication with the highest pay in the sector.
“We’ve invested over £42m in colleague pay this year because we know that every single member of Team Aldi is fundamental to our success and deserve nothing less.”
