On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

Aldi has announced plans to open eight new stores in London this year as part of a £40m expansion, a move expected to create approximately 200 jobs across the capital and Greater London.

The new stores are planned for Hanworth, Willesden, Watford, Marble Arch, and Hoxton, with additional locations including Orpington West, Epsom, and Stepney Green.

Aldi will also refurbish existing branches in Enfield and Kilburn during 2026. The investment targets areas currently served by higher-priced convenience stores and traditional supermarkets.

The expansion follows several openings inside the M25 last year, including sites in Wimbledon, Shoreditch, and Kentish Town.

The retailer is currently working toward a long-term goal of operating 1,500 stores across the UK. The London project is part of a wider £370m investment programme by the supermarket to open 40 new stores nationwide this year.

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: “We know household budgets are still under pressure, and too many Londoners don’t have an Aldi within easy reach. These new stores will bring our unbeatable value to more families while creating around 200 new jobs across the capital.”
