On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

WHSmith has announced the opening of three new retail and hospitality sites across Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon airports, marking a further phase in its 2026 investment strategy for Northern travel hubs.

The expansion includes the debut of the retailer’s first artisan coffee concept, Grindsmith, as the company continues its shift toward a “one-stop-shop” travel model.

At Manchester Airport Terminal 2, the new Grindsmith location is situated post-security. Developed in partnership with the Manchester-based coffee brand, the outlet features barista-serviced coffee and a brunch-focused menu tailored for high-volume transit.

Adjacent to the cafe, the group has opened a newly designed travel essentials store which incorporates industrial-themed design elements, including exposed brick and graphics inspired by the city’s heritage.

Additionally, at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, WHSmith has consolidated its presence with a new, larger one-stop-shop format.

The interior architecture includes localised references, such as artwork inspired by the Museum of Liverpool and a ceiling installation based on the Liver Building’s clock face.

The opening follows a commercial restructuring at the airport which has increased capacity for retail growth in the departure lounge.

Stephen Turner, chief commercial officer at Manchester Airport, noted that the openings align with the nearing completion of the terminal’s £1.3bn transformation programme, which aims to provide a mix of national and local brands.

Andrew Harrison, interim Group CEO at WHSmith, said: “These openings reflect our confidence in the region and our commitment to making every journey better. We’re excited to bring quality food and drink, everyday travel essentials, and familiar brands to more travellers.”
