Waitrose secures Surrey site with shopping centre acquisition

The retailer has secured the long-term future of the Surrey site as part of its national investment strategy

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Waitrose has completed the acquisition of the freehold for Hersham Green Shopping Centre in Surrey, securing the future of its supermarket at the site.

The retailer is now the landlord for the 54,000 sq ft centre, which includes 16 additional retail units and parking facilities for the village.

The 27,000 sq ft Hersham branch has operated for 20 years. It currently includes meat, fish and deli counters, a sushi counter and a John Lewis collection point.

The store provides delivery via Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats, and also donates £12,000 annually to local causes through its community matters programme.

The acquisition follows a £1bn investment in the Waitrose estate. This programme included the refurbishment of 23 shops in 2025, including branches in Weybridge and Oxted.

Waitrose said these upgrades will continue throughout 2026, and include a multi-million-pound project at the Haslemere branch, which is scheduled to reopen on 5 March.

Branch manager Barry Spencer said: “We are pleased to have secured the future of our Hersham store. This acquisition reflects our long-term commitment to the village and provides certainty for our customers and our Partners, who work hard to serve the local community. We have been part of Hersham for two decades, and we look forward to playing a role in the village’s continued success for many years to come.”
