Selfridges to shut today as retailers pay tribute to Queen

It comes as major retailers throughout the country have issued statements paying tribute to the late monarch

Selfridges has announced that its stores in London, Manchester and Birmingham will remain closed today (9 September) as a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away yesterday at the age of 96. 

The retailer acknowledged the temporary closure on its social media pages, alongside a statement that read: “It is with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. ​

“Queen Elizabeth has been a reassuring constant throughout our lives, ascending to the throne on 6 February 1952, making her the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Over the past 70 years, her Majesty has been dedicated to the service of our country and the Commonwealth, demonstrating an enormous sense of duty and commitment.​”

It added: “Our thoughts are very much with the Royal Family at this time, as the country comes together to pay tribute and remember Queen Elizabeth II.” ​

It comes as major retailers throughout the country have issued statements paying tribute to the late monarch. 

Harrods was another luxury retailer to pay tribute, stating: “We stand with the nation in grief on the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Her Majesty stood as a symbol of Britain, bringing comfort, leadership and steadfastness to millions over her 70-year reign. On behalf of Harrods and our employees, we send our deepest condolences to the Royal Family and are united in remembrance of her life dedicated to public service.”

Meanwhile, M&S said: “We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen. She’s led for over 70 years with quiet determination and selfless devotion. We join the Royal Family and the nation in their grief and offer the Royal Family our heartfelt condolences.”

Tesco similarly paid tribute, adding: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen. Our thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family, as we mourn the loss of our longest-serving British monarch. We are indebted to her dedicated service to this country.”

Speaking for the industry, Helen Dickinson, CEO of the British Retail Consortium, said: “The retail industry joins the world in mourning the passing of Her Majesty The Queen. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Royal Family. For over 70 years, The Queen has been a source of solidarity and strength for this nation. Her loss will be felt across the country and she will be greatly missed.”
