The United States and Iran have agreed a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz following a closure that has halted international maritime traffic since late February.

US president Donald Trump announced the strategic passage would open for mine removal operations once a 14-point memorandum of understanding is officially signed this week.

Speaking on Truth Social, he said that a deal is “complete” and that the strait would reopen “upon the signing of the Deal on Friday”.

In one post, Trump said: “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade.”

He added: “This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region. Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me. The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace. With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

It comes as the channel was effectively closed on 28 February following joint US and Israeli military strikes within Iran, disrupting around 20% of global oil and gas supplies.

The closure left thousands of sailors stranded in the Gulf, while a subsequent US naval blockade of Iranian ports has remained in place since April.

The Iranian semi-official state agency Mehr News reported that draft details of the memorandum provide for a phased reopening of the shipping lane within 30 days “under Iranian arrangements”.

Speaking at Downing Street regarding the upcoming social media ban for under-16s, prime minister Keir Starmer said: “Before I start on social media, I want first to welcome the breakthrough reached last night between the US and Iran.

“I congratulate President Trump, the mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, and all those involved.”

He added: “This is a hugely significant moment. We have long called for de-escalation and it is vital that all parties see this opportunity to secure stability in the region, and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”
