Poundland launches Local format pilot

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Poundland is launching a pilot of its new Poundland Local format with two Yorkshire openings in Kendray and Hornsea.

Set to be smaller than a traditional Poundland store, the Local sites are designed to operate in small towns and residential and urban neighbourhoods that the group does not currently serve.

Despite the convenience nature of the shops, prices will be set at an identical rate to those seen in larger Poundland stores.

The stores will also feature chilled and frozen food, an addition that the group intends to roll out at 250 Poundland stores by the end of September.

The inaugural Yorkshire sites will be situated at former Fultons Foods venues that were acquired by Poundland in 2020.

Each shop will employ a total of 24 staff members, trading from 7am to 9pm, with Poundland Local at Kendray opening today (21 May) and Poundland Local at Hornsea launching on 22 May.

Austin Cooke, transformation and retail director at Poundland, said: “The launch of Poundland Local is a really exciting development and we hope customers are as excited as we are.

“While our Local format will have the ranges customers would expect in a neighbourhood store, they won’t have to pay more for that doorstep convenience.”
