Amazon to create 2,500 UK jobs

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Online retail giant Amazon has announced that it will create 2,500 permanent jobs in the UK in 2018, taking the total UK workforce to 27,500 by the end of the year.

The company has said that there are roles available for people with all levels of experience, education and skills, from software developers, engineers and technicians, to those seeking entry-level positions and on-the-job training. It said it has invested over £9.3bn in its UK operations since 2010.

More than 650 permanent roles will be created in the company’s development centres and Amazon Web Services (AWS) – it’s cloud computing offering – in addition to new head office roles. Amazon will have over 6,500 corporate, research and development and AWS roles in the UK by the end of 2018.

The retailer is also hiring for roles in its head office and fashion photography studio in London, development centres in Cambridge, Edinburgh and London, its customer service centre in Edinburgh, within AWS, as well as in its dozens of delivery stations across the country and 16 fulfilment centres, including at new sites in Coventry and Bolton.

The company is currently recruiting a further 170 apprentices in fulfilment centres across the UK with opportunities in operations, engineering and facilities.

Chancellor Philip Hammond, said: “Supporting businesses to create the high-quality jobs of the future is a key part of our plan to create an economy that works for everyone. Innovative companies, such as Amazon, will be at the forefront of our new economy, and I welcome the news that they are creating 2,500 permanent, new jobs across the country. It’s a clear vote of confidence in our workforce and our economy.”

Doug Gurr, Amazon UK country manager, added: “The UK is a fantastic place to do business so we are delighted to continue our investment in the British economy and provide quality, permanent roles for people the length and breadth of the country.”
