Sportswear retailer creates 25 jobs at Cyfarthfa Shopping Park as physical expansion continues

On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

Footasylum has opened a 4,000 square foot store in Merthyr Tydfil, marking the company’s first physical retail presence in the Welsh town.

The site at Cyfarthfa Shopping Park has created 25 jobs. The store will stock third-party brands including Nike, Adidas Originals, Asics, New Balance, and Berghaus, alongside the retailer’s exclusive labels.

The opening forms part of a wider expansion strategy focused on high-footfall retail destinations. The company recently opened outlets in Manchester, Glasgow, and Darlington, alongside appointing chief executive Hannah Mercer to lead international expansion across Europe and the Gulf.

The business also secured expanded HSBC UK funding this year to support its national store rollout programme and increase warehousing capacity.

Retail director at Footasylum, Shannon Osman, said: “We’re incredibly excited to bring Footasylum to Merthyr Tydfil for the first time, expanding our reach and creating 25 local jobs. Cyfarthfa Shopping Park provides a great platform for us to connect with both new and existing customers while showcasing the mix of exclusive and third-party brands we are known for. We look forward to becoming part of the local retail community and welcoming customers through the doors of this fantastic new store.”
