Lidl to open five stores in 24 hours in major UK expansion push

Up to 160 new jobs to be created across the latest wave of openings

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Lidl GB has announced the opening of five new stores in a single day.

The new stores are set to open on 19 February at Chester, Caldy Valley Road, Calne, Oxford Road, Dereham, Yaxham Road, Havant, Purbrook Way and London, Stamford Hill.

According to Lidl, the simultaneous openings mark a major milestone in the supermarket’s ambitious growth strategy.

The openings will help to maintain Lidl’s 31-month streak as the UK’s fastest-growing bricks-and-mortar retailer and will also create up to 160 jobs through these new store openings.

Additionally, the new stores will join Lidl’s ‘Feed it Back’ surplus food donation scheme. In partnership with Neighbourly, this initiative provided 18.5 million meals to 6.8 million people across Great Britain last year, ensuring that, as Lidl grows, its support for local households grows with it.

Richard Taylor, chief real estate officer at Lidl GB, said: “We’re starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve. With this push, we’re set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market.”
