Zalando appoints L’Oreal exec as beauty VP

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Zalando has appointed former L’Oreal executive Thomas Schwulera as its new vice president for beauty.

Schwulera spent more than a decade in senior leadership roles across Europe and the company’s global headquarters in Paris with a background that includes expertise in digital transformation, e-commerce and premium beauty brand management.

He will lead the full strategy for Zalando’s Beauty business from Berlin, focusing on accelerating growth through enhanced curation, technology-driven personalisation, and engaging, content-led experiences.

In his new role he will oversee category strategy, partnerships, and innovation initiatives, in a bid to boost customer engagement and reinforce the business’ position as a destination for beauty discovery online.

He said in a post on LinkedIn: “My first weeks have been incredibly energising, kicking off with our Beauty Partner Event at Zalando’s Experience Hub in Berlin. It was fantastic to connect with colleagues at Zalando and with senior leaders from across the beauty industry, and our strategic discussions reaffirmed our shared commitment to accelerating beauty growth throughout Europe.

“Through our cross-proposition model, customers can effortlessly shop for beauty alongside fashion, sports, and lifestyle all in one destination. Our dedicated team is redefining how customers experience beauty shopping, blending a carefully curated assortment of leading brands with a strong focus on inspiration and entertainment.”

Back in August Zalando upped its full year guidance after it acquired rival firm About You and posted a rise in profit in Q2.
