Hotel Chocolat appoints new UK GM

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Hotel Chocolat has announced the appointment of Carrie Martin as its new UK general manager, effective 6 October 2025.

Her appointment follows the departure of CEO Lysa Hardy after seven years.

Martin joins from snack brand Kind, where she has served as general manager for Europe, the Middle East and Australia since 2021.

She previously held senior commercial and retail roles at Mars, Mars Wrigley and Mars Chocolate, including global route-to-market director and retail excellence director.

In a LinkedIn post, Martin said: “As a long-time admirer of Hotel Chocolat, it is a privilege to now lead a brand in the UK that so many, including myself, feel passionate about. Its blend of ethical values, bold creativity and uncompromising quality sets it apart.”

Similarly, in a LinkedIn post, Hardy added: “After seven fabulous years, it’s time for a new chapter. From CMO to CEO, I’ve had the privilege of working with an exceptional team to turn ideas into action – Velvetising the world by creating a premium drinking chocolate category, navigating the pandemic, elevating retail experience, piloting new formats, and welcoming more customers than ever to the brand.

“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, but even more of how we did it: with heart, ambition and kindness. I can’t wait to cheer them on as the brand continues to thrive.”
