The Works has announced the appointment of former Dunelm CEO, Nick Wharton, as independent non-executive director starting from today (1 August).

According to the arts and crafts retailer, its plan is for Wharton to become chair of the audit committee after the group’s annual general meeting.

News of the appointment comes as Harry Morley previously announced his intention to step down as senior independent non-executive director after the meeting, as part of the board’s succession planning.

A chartered accountant, Wharton has held senior finance roles at Pepco Group, Superdry and Halfords, and was chief executive of Dunelm.

He also serves as a non-executive director and audit committee chair at AG Barr, Oriflame Investment Holding and Mears Group, and has previously been a director at Mothercare.

Steve Bellamy, chair of The Works, said: “I am pleased to welcome Nick to the board. Nick has very relevant sector and plc experience, and I am confident that the business will benefit from his expertise as we continue to capitalise on growth opportunities, deliver our strategic priorities and increase shareholder value.”

Wharton added: “This is an exciting time to join The Works – the business has made significant strategic and financial progress in the last year and there is a clear opportunity for further growth in the years ahead.”
