Asda to open 25 convenience stores as part of turnaround strategy

The news of this renewed expansion is part of a broader effort under the leadership of executive chairman, Allan Leighton, who returned to Asda in November 2024

Asda is reportedly getting ready to expand its convenience store footprint with 25 openings in new locations between June and December of this year, according to The Telegraph

It is understood that the supermarket chain’s strategy is to grow its smaller store formats in a bid to reach more local shoppers in towns and city centres, after it only opened 12 convenience stores last year.

Asda has acquired 470 sites from Co-op and EG Group over the past two years. The new Asda stores will include some of the former Co-op locations.

The convenience store sector is experiencing heightened competition, with Tesco and Waitrose announcing similar expansion plans, aligning with the supermarket’s strategy.

The news of this renewed expansion is part of a broader effort under the leadership of executive chairman, Allan Leighton, who returned to Asda in November 2024.

Aldi accounted for 10.6% of food and drink sales across the sector in the 12 weeks to 23 March, overtaking Asda’s market share which fell from 10.5% to 10.4%.

Asda’s market share has dropped from 14.8% to 12.5% since it was acquired by the private equity group TDR Capital and the Issa brothers in 2021.

Meanwhile, data at the start of the month revealed that Aldi had overtaken Asda in food and drink sales, dealing a further blow to the struggling supermarket chain.

Asda has been approached for comment.
