Eldon Square appoints new centre director

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Eldon Square, the shopping and leisure destination in Newcastle, has appointed Helen Cowie as centre director.

As the investment programme in Eldon Square continues with several arrivals set to open this year including Next, River Island, Flight Club and Freight Island, it said Cowie will bring over 30 years of extensive retail and operational experience to lead the centre through its ongoing transformation.

Cowie, born and raised in the region, has held many senior positions at Marks and Spencer across multiple regions, including Scotland, North East and North West England.

Eldon Square said that her experience in establishing new business streams will “help drive innovation across all aspects of Eldon Square’s continuing development”.

Matthew Beddow, senior director of Asset Management at Eldon Square, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Helen Cowie to the Eldon Square team. Helen’s wealth of experience and passion for delivering an excellent customer experience will be instrumental in shaping the future of the centre. With her strong background in the sector and her deep understanding of the evolving retail, leisure and entertainment landscape, Helen is well positioned to lead Eldon Square through this exciting chapter.”

Cowie added: “I’m extremely excited to be joining Eldon Square during this transformational period for the centre. Eldon Square is more than just a shopping centre, it’s an integral part of Newcastle City Centre with a mission to elevate itself to becoming the go to retail and leisure destination in the North East. Along with my team, I look forward to continuing to enhance the shopping experience and making a positive impact on the future of this iconic Newcastle destination.”
