Co-op partners with Walmart on new online fulfilment tech

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Co-op has announced a partnership with Walmart Commerce Technologies that will see it implement online fulfilment technology – store assist – to enhance the colleague and customer experience, as well as support its quick commerce growth ambitions.

It comes as Co-op has ambitions to reach more than one third share of the QComm market.

Walmart’s store assist product claims to digitalise and streamline online order fulfilment workflows, streamlining omni-channel fulfilment workflow to enhance in-store processes and operations.

This will remove the need for colleagues to switch between quick commerce apps or different devices, allowing for faster delivery times.

The app will also allow retailers to manage pickup, third-party marketplace, ship-from-store, and last-mile delivery orders all in one place.

George Hayworth, head of online development at Co-op, said: “Growing our share of the quick commerce market is our focus through both our own online shop and with strategic partners. Our approach is centred on ease, speed and convenience from our local stores, which are well placed in the heart of communities.

“We are pleased to work closely with Walmart Commerce Technologies to implement the new technology that is easy to use and supports our continued growth, while further enhancing the quick and reliable service that is important to our member-owners and customers, whenever and wherever they choose to shop with us.”

In March, Co-op rolled-out member price benefits to its own online shop, having made its ambitions known to grow the app’s active members from 5 million to 8 million by 2030.
