Second Morrisons strike called off after improved pay offer

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Planned industrial action that was due to take place at Morrisons warehouses in Northwich and Wakefield from 13 June to 16 June has been called off.

Between 23 May and 26 May, hundreds of workers in Gadbrook in Cheshire and Wakefield in West Yorkshire had been taking part in strike action over proposed changes to their pension contributions and take-home pay.

Unite had claimed that workers were forced to increase their pension contributions while Morrisons reduced theirs, leaving them £500 a year worse off.

Now, the second strike that was supposed to happen in June has been cancelled after the supermarket chain made an improved offer.

Unite national officer Adrian Jones said: “As a goodwill gesture, and following a new offer from Morrisons, we are suspending any planned strike action while we ballot our members.”
