JD Sports opens Gateshead flagship store

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

JD Sports has opened its latest flagship store at Gateshead’s Metrocentre on 25 June.

The store is 18,000 square feet and has over 40 brands, including Nike, Adidas and The North Face, and JD Sports offered shoppers the chance to customise a pair of trainers, purchased in-store, for free at the brands customisation station throughout the weekend.

JD Sports Fashion said: “JD Sports has occupied a special place on the nation’s high streets for over 40 years. We pride ourselves on embracing the communities that shop with us and the culture that surrounds us, and this new Metrocentre store embodies that commitment.”

Ben Cox of Sovereign Centros, senior asset manager for Metrocentre, said: “It’s fantastic to unveil the new flagship JD Sports store, a truly exceptional fit out from one of our leading brands.

“The store is set to be the largest in the region, providing an upgraded destination for streetwear and sports apparel from over 40 of the biggest and best brands around.”

The opening followed the recent launch of H Beauty by Harrods in Metrocentre’s lower Town Square earlier this month.
