On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Kingfisher has announced the appointment of Chris Blatchford as the company’s new chief information officer (CIO).

In his new role, Blatchford will lead the development and delivery of Kingfisher’s technology strategy as part of the retailer’s ongoing digital transformation.

He joins from RELX Elsevier where he most recently served as chief technology officer, leading a team of 800 engineers to create user centric digital products and design highly scalable open data platform architectures.

Previously, Blatchford also held a variety of technology roles at Thomson Reuters, including head of enterprise technology, and he served as head of professional services, Europe, at CPA Global.

JJ Van Oosten, Kingfisher’s chief digital and technology officer, said: “I am very pleased to welcome Chris to the team. He will play a key role in helping us to bring greater speed and choice to customers as we grow e-commerce sales and deliver on our Powered by Kingfisher strategy. His agile and product-led mindset will be a huge asset.”

Blatchford added: “I am thrilled to be joining Kingfisher at this exciting stage in their digital transformation journey. I’ve been very impressed by what has been achieved in recent years, particularly in e-commerce, and I look forward to working with the team to make the most of the huge opportunities ahead.”
