On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Made.com has announced the appointment of Claire Valoti as an independent non-executive director, and she will join the company’s board of directors with effect from 13 May 2022.

In her new role, Valoti will become a member of the audit and risk and remuneration committees.

Matthew Price will step down as a member, and the committee will now comprise Gwyn Burr (chair), Susanne Given and Claire Valoti, altogether comprising three independent non-executive directors.

Valoti has over two decades of experience in the technology industry and in leadership roles at digital and consumer technology businesses, including her current role as vice president of EMEA at Snap Inc.

Over the last six years, Valoti has been “instrumental” in driving Snap Inc.’s international growth and leading its expansion in new and existing markets.

Prior to joining Snap Inc., she was the director of agency partnerships at Facebook, helping clients understand how to reach customers using social media. She also held director level roles at Weve, O2 Media and Telefonica, where she led the media businesses.

Valoti began her career at Mindshare, part of the WPP group, where she started the digital function to help brands use digital to reach their customers, consequently ending up being head of digital display and mobile.

Susanne Given, chair of Made.com, said: “I am delighted to welcome Claire Valoti to the Made board. Claire brings a wealth of digital marketing experience relating to both the UK and international markets, and her deep understanding of how businesses engage with digital-native customers will further strengthen the existing mix of skills on our board.”

Valoti added: “I’m thrilled to be joining Made’s board as the company embarks on its next phase of growth. Made has an exceptional understanding of its customer base and a strong strategy in place to take more of its products to new customers and markets.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work alongside such a talented leadership team and board as we deliver on Made’s mission to make exceptional design accessible to all.”
