Clarks appoints former New Balance lead as CEO

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Clarks has appointed Jonathan Ram as its new CEO, with Ram set to join the business next month.

He brings with him extensive footwear and apparel leadership experience. He was most recently group president of Global Activewear at HanesBrands, Inc., where he led the growth of the activewear business across multiple brands and businesses.

Before that, Ram spent 16 years at New Balance, where over the years he ran the LATAM, EMEA and North American businesses. He was said to be “instrumental” in leading transformation, growth, and profitability in the EMEA arm of the group, and later led the North American multi-channel business.

Commenting on his appointment, Colin Li, chairman of Clarks, said: “I am pleased to welcome Jon to Clarks as our new CEO. He brings significant global experience and understanding of the footwear and apparel market. In the last year Clarks has implemented a focused turnaround strategy designed to protect the future of the business, and to build a foundation for sustainable growth in the years ahead.

“This has resulted in an improved financial position. With the appointment of Jon as CEO we now look forward to a new phase where we will focus on growing our business in current and new markets and channels, and Jon will take a leading role in taking Clarks to the next level.”

Ram added: “Clarks is an iconic brand with a rich history in shoe making craftsmanship, expertise and sustainability. It is truly an honour to be given the opportunity to lead the Clarks business and work with such a talented team.

“Significant progress has been made in the last year and my focus is on taking the company to the next level of growth and success. We have a lot to do, and I am excited to begin the journey.”
