Sainsbury’s opens new Wapping London Dock site, creating 21 jobs

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Sainsbury’s has launched a new Wapping London Dock local store, creating 21 jobs for the area.

According to the grocer, the new site will serve nearby residents and will be a “convenient and fresh destination” for commuters and visitors to the neighbourhood.

The new store also features an instore bakery and customers will be able to purchase coffee to takeaway with the addition of a Costa coffee machine.

As part of its launch in the area, the group has pledged to “play an active role” in the local community and support Sainsbury’s nationwide community programmes and charity partners.

In January, Sainsbury’s also announced an additional £1m community fund for stores to donate to charities and other good causes in local areas.

This follows Sainsbury’s ‘Help Brighten a Million Christmases’ campaign that raised £6m in December 2020 for over 800 local charity partners.

Patrick Dunne, property director for Sainsbury’s, said: “We’re really looking forward to serving customers at London Dock, especially the growing residential community.

“This store is a great asset to our estate and gives us a prime position to serve residents, commuters and tourists. We’re proud to be opening another convenience store in the London region to give more customers access to our high quality, great value products.”
