Tom Singer appointed Halfords non-exec director

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Halfords has announced the appointment of Tom Singer as non-executive director, with effect from 16 September.

Singer previously held the position of CFO InterContinental Hotels Group, and British United Provident Association (BUPA).

Earlier in his career, he was CFO and COO of William Hill and finance director of Moss Bros, having started his career in professional services and spending a total of 12 at ‘Big 4’ accountancy firm PwC and McKinsey.

Singer currently serves as non-executive director on the boards of private healthcare services group Mediclinic and DP Eurasia NV, operator of pizza restaurants in Turkey and Russia.

He will become a member of the remuneration, audit and nomination committees upon joining the board, and after an “appropriate” handover period will succeed David Adams as chair of the audit committee.

Keith Williams, Halfords chairman, said: “David is a highly regarded non-executive director and we have benefited greatly from his considerable efforts since he joined the board, initially as a director and more recently in his additional roles as chair of the audit committee and as senior independent director.

“We are grateful to David for the work he has done in these roles. Moving forward, we are delighted to welcome Tom to the board. We are sure that he will contribute greatly to the ongoing success of Halfords.”
