Harvey Nichols warns staff of redundancies

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Harvey Nichols has reportedly warned staff they may be facing a slew of redundancies in the wake of coronavirus

According to the Times, chief executive Manju Malhotra warned “there may be staff redundancies at all locations” in an email sent to 1,500 staff, adding that the crisis would “change the shape of this remarkable business”.

The retailer added that “no decisions” had yet been made on how many staff could be made redundant in its upcoming restructuring.

Malhotra also told staff that “we value each of our employees and their contribution to the business and are doing everything we can to avoid or minimise the number of redundancies”, the Times has revealed.

Harvey Nichols is the latest retailer to fall victim to the ongoing effects of coronavirus, after Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Debenhams and Boots have all predicted or enforced a raft of redundancies in the wake of the crisis.

The retailer currently operates seven UK sites including stores in London, Birmingham and Leeds, as well as six sites overseas.
