Poundland to reopen 36 stores across the UK

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Discount chain Poundland has revealed it is set to open 36 stores across the UK next week  as it begins to reopen its store estate

While most of Poundlands stores have remained open for “essential” shopping, In March, the retailer closed around 100 stores that were located close to another of its stores.

The select stores will be made up from the previously closed 100 and will reopen with safety and social distancing measures in place on Monday 18 May.

Measures will include security staff at the doors to help limit the number of people in the store at any one time and floor markings and perplex glass at checkout counters.

Poundland’s retail director Austin Cooke said: “We’ve never been prouder of our role as a retailer at the heart of communities and high streets.

“While safety has to come first, we’re delighted to be able to begin reopening hibernating Poundland stores to fully serve those communities across the UK with the essentials they need.”
