M&S appoints Eoin Tonge as new CFO

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Marks and Spencer has appointed Eoin Tonge as its new chief financial officer.

Tonge is currently the CFO of Greencore Group, a position he has held since 2016. Prior to this, he was the managing director of the Grocery Business for two years and was previously the chief strategy officer from 2009-2014.

He has also held positions in finance, treasury and capital markets at Goldman Sachs across London, Hong Kong and New York.

Tonge will join the department store in June and will receive an annual salary of £600,000.

David Surdeau, currently interim CFO, will remain with the business to support Tonge as he transitions into his new role.

Tonge said: “Marks and Spencer is a brand that I have admired as a customer as well as a supplier for some time. I’m excited to be joining the board and management team to drive forward the transformation of the business, realise its full potential and make it special again.”

CEO Steve Rowe added: “Eoin’s appointment concludes a rigorous search for a world-class finance director. He brings in-depth knowledge of food, as well as strategy and operations, and is another addition to the very strong management team we are building to transform M&S.”

Earlier this month, M&S appointed Katie Bickerstaffe as its new chief strategy and transformation director.

Bickerstaffe is currently a non-executive director of Marks and Spencer, and will take up her role on 27 April. She will serve on the board and operating committee as an executive director.
