Mike Ashley and ScS in competition over Sofa.com

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Both Mike Ashley and rival furniture retailer ScS have expressed interest in acquiring Sofa.com.

ScS has confirmed via a statement its interest in Sofa.com which was put up for sale last month. It said: “The group confirms that ScS Group is in discussions regarding a potential acquisition of the business and assets of Sofa.com Limited. There can be no certainty that a transaction will be concluded and a further announcement, as appropriate, will be made in due course.”

According to Sky News Sports Direct owner Ashley has also launched a bid to acquire Sofa.com, as he aims to continue a recent string of high street purchases. Sofa.com already has concessions inside House of Fraser Stores which Ashley acquired in August of last year.

KPMG, which is handling the auction on behalf of LGT European Capital – the company’s former lenders, is expected to finalise a deal in the coming days.

The news comes as Ashley is also seeking deals to acquire HMV and Patisserie Valerie from administration.
