Tony Hoggett appointed Tesco COO

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Former Tesco Asia boss Tony Hoggett has been appointed to the newly created position of chief operations officer (COO) of Tesco UK.

Alison Horner, former chief people officer, will take over as CEO for Asia. According to the group Horner has a long history of operational experience and leadership within Tesco.

Natasha Adams will be promoted from UK people officer to chief people officer and has over 20 years of experience in the business.

In a statement, Tesco said: “To elevate core operational excellence across the group we have created the position of chief operations officer (COO). This role will, like the chief product and chief customer officer roles, deliver for the UK business on a day-to-day basis, whilst also leveraging operational capability and strategy across the group.”

Matt Davies, previous CEO of Tesco’s UK and Irish business, recently stepped down from his position at the end of April, following the group’s merger with Booker. He has since been appointed by arts and crafts retailer Hobbycraft as its new chairman.
