Lidl GB joins United Nations Global Compact

The compact is the largest corporate sustainability project in the world

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Lidl GB has announced it has joined the United Nations (UN) Global Compact initiative, a programme for the creation, integration and divulgence of responsible business practices.

The discount supermarket chain will now carry out its reporting governance, operations and strategies in accordance with the compact’s ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption, aiming to promote the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The business’ employees will also gain access to the UN Global Compact Academy, which provides free learning modules on a variety of topics to encourage engagement and awareness within the company.

The UN Global Compact, established in 2000, is the largest corporate sustainability project globally. It consists of over 20,000 companies in over 160 countries, and upwards of 60 Global Compact Networks.

As the first UK discounter to join the scheme, Lidl GB said it is showing its dedication to making responsible business decisions to work towards a more sustainable future.

Matt Juden, head of sustainability at Lidl GB, said: “At Lidl GB, we believe that access to health and sustainability should be a right, not a luxury. By joining the UN Global Compact, we are committing to democratising sustainable practices across our business.

“We aren’t just here to broadcast our progress, we are here to collectively solve some of the biggest issues facing society. This membership allows us to work alongside global peers to engineer waste out of the supply chain and secure a resilient future.”
