Asda distribution managers secure GMB bargaining deal

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

The GMB union has announced that it now represents almost 1,000 Asda distribution managers after they voted in favour of a collective bargaining agreement covering pay and conditions.

The move, which was authorised by the Central Arbitration Committee, applies to 980 salaried managers across 23 distribution sites. It marks the first time that GMB has secured collective bargaining rights for this group of Asda employees.

Nadine Houghton, national officer of GMB, said: “Asda’s distribution managers told us they were fed up and needed a voice in the workplace. This is what they have voted for. They will now get an equal seat at the table when it comes to deciding their pay and conditions. And no changes can be made without consulting the workers who make Asda’s profits.

“We are clear – Asda’s owners TDR Capital are making business decisions that are deeply concerning their workforce. It is understandable that these workers are looking for ways to protect themselves from the cuts being inflicted by TDR. Asda workers create the profit, and Asda owners are extracting it.”

An Asda spokesperson added: “The GMB has secured sufficient support from salaried managers in our depots to establish a collective bargaining unit representing these colleagues.

“We respect the outcome of this vote and will work constructively with the GMB to agree on the next steps. Our focus is on fostering a collaborative and respectful relationship with the union, guided by doing the right thing for our colleagues.”
