Aldi to upgrade more than 20 stores by end of 2025

On this episode of Talking Shop I am joined by Zipline CEO and co-founder Melissa Wong. We discuss how Melissa’s 10 years’ of frontline experience informed her approach to building a SaaS company, the recurring operational frustrations that most head offices still underestimate, and why she believes technology should be designed with the store associate as the primary user. We also explore current trends in store execution and how retailers can bridge the gap between corporate strategy and the shop floor.

Aldi is set to upgrade more than 20 of its UK stores before the end of the year, including two major extensions in Cumbria and Wales.

Its stores in Barrow-in-Furness and Ebbw Vale will undergo full-scale extensions between now and December, while a further 21 sites will receive internal improvements such as new layouts, updated fixtures and sustainability upgrades.

The works are part of Aldi’s ongoing store enhancement programme, which has already modernised more than 500 branches with changes including wider aisles and expanded space for fresh produce.

The supermarket is also continuing its expansion plans, with around 40 new stores scheduled to open across the UK this year.

The full list of sites due to be upgraded includes stores in Brighton, Sunderland, Chelmsford, Bristol, Cannock, and Livingston.

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: “Our investment into our store estate is part of our ongoing commitment to provide the very best shopping experience for our customers.

“By extending and refreshing our existing sites, we’re providing more sustainable and convenient stores, ensuring they continue to meet the needs of the communities they serve for years to come.”
