Poundland has confirmed the locations of a further 12 stores that are set to close under its restructuring plan, taking the total number identified to 52 out of 68.

As part of the restructuring plan, 13 stores have already closed, with 15 closures planned for 17 August, and 12 planned for 24 August.

The retailer has since identified the next 12 stores to close after that, with 11 closing on 31 August and one on 14 September.

Poundland said employees at affected locations were informed of their store’s status in June and Poundland completed briefing employees on the specific closing date for the further 12 sites last week.

Poundland’s retail director Darren MacDonald said: “When a store nearby closes, we understand how disappointing that is for customers, but nevertheless look forward to welcoming them to another Poundland store in the future.

“Work is underway with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles.”

Poundland previously confirmed that up to 150 stores and two distribution centres are set to close under a restructuring plan, subject to court approval.

Following Poundland’s acquisition by Gordon Brothers in June, an initial 68 stores will close, and along with rent reduction plans, its estate will eventually fall to 650-700 stores, down from around 800.

The retailer also confirmed plans to cease online sales and withdraw the sales of frozen food, whilst reducing its chilled food offer, which will in future be anchored around its £3 meal deal and other essentials such as milk.

As well as scaling back its digital presence, converting Poundland.co.uk from a transactional website to a brand website, the retailer also confirmed plans to end its Perks loyalty app, which was rolled out across the UK last year.

Meanwhile, Poundland’s frozen and digital distribution centre at Darton, South Yorkshire, is set to close later this year, followed by the closure of its national distribution centre at Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands, in early 2026.

In March, Pepco confirmed that it was “actively exploring” a potential sale of Poundland amid rising pressures on the business, and instead plans to focus on the Pepco brand as a single future format.

The discount retail group said its “ultimate ambition” is to operate under a single Pepco format, which largely drives the group’s earnings, with a focus on its higher margin Pepco clothing and general merchandise ranges.
