Tesco to open 10 new stores in Ireland amid €40m investment

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Tesco Ireland is to create 400 new jobs as part of a €40m (£34m) investment that will see 10 new stores open across the country in the next 12 months.

The move will bring the supermarket’s permanent workforce to more than 13,500, reinforcing its position as one of the largest private employers in Ireland. Roles include customer assistants, grocery home delivery drivers and line managers.

The new stores – a mix of larger supermarkets and smaller Express outlets – will take Tesco’s total store count in Ireland to 193. Around 100 of the new jobs will be at a store opening in Fermoy, County Cork, at the end of July.

Additional locations include Dublin, Galway, Louth and Meath, with recruitment at M1 Retail Park and Howth due to begin in the autumn.

Tesco Ireland chief executive Geoff Byrne said: “This €40m investment underscores our commitment to maintaining our position as a leading employer and retailer in Ireland. Our colleagues are at the heart of our business, and we look forward to welcoming new team members this year and recognising them with market-leading reward and benefits.”

Minister for enterprise, tourism and employment Peter Burke described the investment as “an incredible boost for our local towns and the Irish economy”.

He added: “The creation of these jobs, particularly with the opening of 10 new stores across several counties including Cork, Dublin and Galway, is a clear endorsement of Ireland’s retail sector and workforce.”
