Wilko reopens store in Rotherham

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Wilko officially returned to Rotherham on 29 March with a new store at Parkgate Shopping Centre.

Deputy mayor of Rotherham, councillor Robert Taylor, officiated the launch with a ribbon cutting.

The new Wilko Rotherham offers customers all the essentials, as well as 20% more product lines than before.

Customers are also able to browse and order from the 100,000 items available on wilko.com using self-service terminals for home delivery.

The new store created 50 new jobs for the local area, and when recruiting the team, ex-Wilko employees have been prioritised.

Alex Simpkin, CEO of CDS Superstores, trading as The Range and Wilko, said: “We’re overjoyed by the reaction of Rotherham locals to the new Wilko store and we’re pleased to see that everyone is excited by Wilko’s return to the UK high street.”

Janet Drury, centre manager of Parkgate Shopping, added: “Team Parkgate feels really proud to be welcoming back one of the country’s first few reopened Wilko stores.

“The brand has always been a great part of the wonderful mix of shopping experience on offer here at Parkgate and we share the customer’s joy at seeing its doors reopen to Rotherham shoppers.”
