Sainsbury’s is reportedly in talks with the UK government to mitigate possible shipping delays due to unrest in the Red Sea, according to Bloomberg.

Bloomoberg understood that the chief executive of the retailer, Simon Roberts, said the business is working hard to make sure the latest intelligence is understood and reduce potential disruptions.

Roberts said: “We are working on our sequencing of orders to ensure we always have good availability in product areas which can travel through these routes, such as general merchandise and wine.”

Recently, there have been delays in shipments after container ships have been forced to divert their journey due to the Houthi rebels attacks in the Suez Canal.

Roberts said that the vast majority of container ships are choosing to go around South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, which takes 10 to 14 days longer for shipments to reach their destinations.

Last week it was revealed that retailer Next is also expecting the shipping delays to affect most of its stock.

Roberts added: “Getting products from across the world is an important issue for the Government, so we are on regular calls to make sure we have the latest intel and understand the potential impacts.”
