Borough Yards bolsters beauty offering with two new arrivals

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

The retail and leisure district in London, Borough Yards, has announced the arrival of Ted Baker-owned barbers Ted’s Grooming room and skin specialists Re:lax this autumn to bolster its beauty offering.

The news follows the signing of 12 additional brands over the summer, including Ace and Tate, Amorino, Bancone, Lids and Malin and Goetz.

The 160,000 sq ft regeneration project, which provides new offices, a cinema, shops and restaurants within revived Victorian railway arches next door to Borough Market, already counts The Office Group, Everyman Cinema and Le Chocolat Alain Ducasse as occupiers.

Launched in 2008 by renowned British fashion brand Ted Baker, Ted’s Grooming Room offers a range of male grooming services. With 19 locations across London, Borough Yards was chosen for its blend of heritage and contemporary design, reflecting ”the barbers’ own mix of 1920s-inspired style and modern innovation”.

Borough Yards is delivered by investor and developer MARK, which has a multi-sector portfolio across Europe’s cities and a strong reputation for delivering some of London’s most successful regeneration projects, including Mayfair’s Burlington Arcade – a hallmark of London luxury retail.

Currently, MARK is restoring the The Whiteley department store into prime residential, retail and hotel development as part of a £3bn regeneration of Queensway Parade in Bayswater.

Lily Lin, managing director for UK&I at MARK, said: “The arrival of these three new signings in Borough Yards demonstrates the scheme’s dynamism in welcoming some of London’s best-loved independent brands while nurturing up-and-coming retailers.

“Accompanied by a string of pop-up art installations this autumn, the area is cementing itself as a go-to cultural hotspot.”
