Sainsbury’s CEO lands near £5m pay packet

Figures from the Office for National Statistics state that food inflation in April was at 19.3%, only slightly down from the record high of 19.6% in March

The CEO of Sainsbury’s Simon Roberts received a pay packet of £4.95m last year in the form of cash and shares.

The bulk of this award was a £1.7m bonus and £2.2m in share awards alongside Roberts’ £899,000 base pay, a 3.5% increase.

Overall this figure of £4.95m was an increase of 41% compared with his pay packet of £3.5m the year before.

This news comes after Sainsbury’s pre-tax profits fell to £327m in the year ended 5 March down from £854m in the same period last year.

It also comes as shoppers face unprecedented levels of food inflation despite the fall in energy costs.
