JD Sports appoints two new directors to board

Angela Luger and Darren Shapland, who both have extensive experience in retail, join with effect from 1 June 2023

JD Sports has appointed Angela Luger and Darren Shapland as its newest non-executive directors, with effect from 1 June 2023.ย 

Following their appointments, Luger will join the remuneration committee while Shapland will join the audit and risk committee.

Luger brings a โ€œwealthโ€ of retail and non-executive director experience to the board, with experience in digital commerce, digital transformation and marketing.ย 

She has recently been appointed a non-executive director of Jet2 Plc and currently acts as a non-executive director of New Look Retailers Ltd, Portmeirion Group Plc and SCS Group Plc. She also acts as chair at Paint Traders Ltd and WealthiHer Network.ย

In addition, Luger has previously held non-executive roles at Distribuidora Internacional de Alimentacion S.A. and Manchester Airports Holding Ltd. She has also held positions at Cadbury’s, Coca Cola and Asda and has acted as managing director at Debenhams and CEO at The Original Factory Shop and N Brown Group Plc.ย ย 

Meanwhile, Shapland has โ€œextensiveโ€ experience in retail and consumer businesses over the past 35 years as both an executive and non-executive director. In recent years he has held a variety of non-executive chair and audit chair roles in FTSE 250 and FTSE 100 businesses including Poundland Plc, Ferguson Plc and Ladbrokes Plc.ย 

He is currently chair of Topps Tiles Plc as well as being chair and director of a number of privately owned businesses. He was previously CEO for Carpetright, having previously been CFO of a number of large retailers including J Sainsbury Plc, Carpetright Plc, Superdrug (Kingfisher Plc) and a number of divisions of The Burton Group Plc.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
